Why We Recommend Yesim eSIM for Thailand and Phuket
An honest review of Yesim eSIM for Thailand: data-only plans from small packs to unlimited, local networks, hotspot and fair-use limits, the 30-day refund rule, and when Airalo, Saily or a Thai tourist SIM is the better buy.
Mobile data is the first thing you need in Phuket: to order a car at the airport, to message the hotel, to use maps on a scooter. Our recommended partner for this is Yesim, an eSIM provider. Here is why, what exactly you get, the limits that are easy to miss, and the cases where we would point you to a different option. If you buy through our button we earn a commission; your price is the same.
What an eSIM is, briefly
An eSIM is a SIM card that exists as a profile inside your phone instead of a piece of plastic. You buy a plan online, scan a QR code or tap an install button, and the phone gets a second line for data. Your home SIM stays in the phone, so you still receive calls and bank SMS on your usual number, while the internet runs over the eSIM. Your phone must support eSIM and must not be carrier-locked.

Why we chose Yesim for Thailand
A wide choice of Thailand plans
Yesim sells Thailand plans in two main shapes. Fixed-data plans come in sizes from very small packs up to tens of gigabytes, usually valid for 30 days. Unlimited plans are sold by the number of days and are popular with people who work online or stream. There is also a pay-as-you-go option, Pay&Fly, aimed at travellers moving between several countries. On Yesim's Thailand page at the time of writing, a 1 GB / 30-day plan was listed at about 3 USD and a 30 GB / 30-day plan at about 28 USD. Prices move, so check the current price before you buy.
It runs on the main Thai networks
Thailand's major mobile operators are AIS, dtac and True. Yesim's plans connect to local networks, and the exact partner can depend on the plan. In Phuket's towns and along the west coast, all three big networks have good 4G and often 5G. Yesim says 5G is available where the local partner network provides it.
Install before you fly
Installation is one tap in the app or a QR code. Yesim says a plan can be activated within 180 days of purchase, so you can buy and install at home on Wi-Fi and turn the line on when you land at HKT. That avoids the most common eSIM problem: trying to install a profile without internet at the airport.
A real refund rule and 24/7 support
Yesim offers refunds for data plans and top-ups requested within 30 days of purchase, as long as the plan has not been used or expired. That is a fair safety net if your trip is cancelled. Support is available around the clock in the app and by email; the company advertises an average response time of a few minutes.
How much data do you actually need?
A rough guide for a holiday in Phuket: maps, messengers, ride-hailing and social media typically use around 0.5–1 GB a day; regular video calls or streaming push that to 2–3 GB or more. For a one-week trip without much video, a 5–10 GB plan is usually enough. For two weeks with daily streaming, or if you work remotely and share data with a laptop, an unlimited plan is simpler. If you are unsure, start with a mid-size pack: Yesim lets you top up from the app.
Limits you should know about
- Data only, no Thai number. Standard plans give you internet but not a Thai phone number for calls and SMS. Some Thai services and deliveries prefer a local number; a messenger app solves most cases, but not all.
- Unlimited is not unlimited at full speed. Unlimited plans come with a daily fair-use threshold. After you pass it, the speed is reduced. For maps, messengers and social media this rarely matters; for heavy video uploads it does.
- Hotspot depends on the operator. Sharing data with a laptop usually works, but Yesim itself says hotspot availability depends on the network. If you rely on it for work, test it on day one, and remember that a used plan cannot be refunded.
- Coverage at sea is patchy. On boat trips to Phi Phi, the Similans or Phang Nga Bay, any mobile network drops in places. That is geography, not the eSIM.
When an alternative is better
Airalo has one of the largest eSIM catalogues and is often competitive on larger fixed-data packs. If you know you will use, say, 10–20 GB and do not need unlimited, compare the price for your exact size.
Saily (from the makers of NordVPN) bundles extras such as an ad blocker, a web-protection filter and a virtual location feature. If those matter to you, it is worth a look.
A Thai tourist SIM from AIS, dtac or True, bought at Phuket Airport or a shop in town with your passport, is often the best deal for long stays and gives you a real Thai number. The downside: you deal with a counter after the flight, and you need a free SIM slot or an eSIM conversion in the shop.
We compare all of these in detail, including prices, in best eSIM and mobile internet for Thailand and Phuket.
Who Yesim is not for
- People staying several months who want the lowest cost per gigabyte: a local SIM usually wins.
- Anyone whose phone does not support eSIM or is locked to a home carrier.
- Anyone who needs a Thai number for local verification codes.
Practical tips for Phuket
- Install at home, switch on at HKT. After landing, choose the eSIM as the data line and turn data roaming on for that line only.
- Turn roaming off on your home SIM so it does not quietly run up charges, but keep the line active for calls and bank SMS.
- Download offline maps of Phuket before boat trips and before riding to remote viewpoints.
- Use data, not SMS, for taxis. Grab and Bolt work over data; registration is easier while you still have your home number.
- Riding a scooter? A phone holder and working navigation are safety equipment, not luxuries. Read our guide on scooter rental, licence and checkpoints.
Bottom line
We recommend Yesim because it covers the typical Phuket holiday well: a plan for any length from a short break to an unlimited month, the main Thai networks, installation before departure, a clear refund rule and round-the-clock support. If you need a Thai number or plan a long stay on a budget, a local tourist SIM is the smarter choice.
