Why We Recommend EKTA Travel Insurance for Thailand — and Its Limits
An honest review of EKTA travel insurance for Thailand: plans and coverage limits, deductibles, activity levels for scooters and water sports, buying while already abroad, who underwrites it, and when another insurer is the better choice.
A Thai hospital bill after a scooter fall or a dengue fever can easily run into thousands of dollars, and private hospitals in Phuket usually want a guarantee of payment before treatment. Our recommended partner for travel insurance is EKTA. This article explains why, what the plans include, and, just as important, the limits and the cases where we would advise you to buy elsewhere. We earn a commission when you buy through our button; it does not change the price.
What EKTA is
EKTA is a digital travel insurance product sold online, in an app and through messengers such as WhatsApp and Telegram. Policies are issued in minutes, and people of any citizenship can buy them, for ages listed from 0 to 100. According to EKTA's website, the policies are underwritten by IC "Auras Insurance" LLC, an insurer licensed in the Union of Comoros. We come back to what that means below.

Why we recommend it for Phuket
Simple plans with clear limits
EKTA's site shows three main plans. Start, from roughly 1 USD a day, with 50,000 USD of medical cover. Gold, from roughly 1.75 USD a day, with 150,000 USD. Max+, from roughly 6 USD a day, with 500,000 USD. Prices depend on age, trip length and options, so check the current price for your dates. For Thailand we suggest at least Gold: the main reason is the deductible, explained next.
Zero deductible on the higher plans
The Start plan carries a 25% deductible, which means you pay a quarter of each covered bill yourself. Gold and Max+ show a 0% deductible. For a trip where a small clinic visit for an infected scrape or an ear infection after diving is quite likely, the difference matters more than the headline coverage amount.
Activity levels that match a beach holiday
EKTA prices policies by activity level: calm rest (swimming, yoga), active rest (for example cycling and water sports) and extreme sports. EKTA's own Thailand materials place scooters and mopeds in the active category. If you plan to ride a scooter, snorkel from a speedboat or try a beginner dive, choose the level that names those activities. Picking "calm rest" to save a dollar a day is the most common way to end up uninsured.
What is covered
According to EKTA's description, the plans cover emergency medical treatment and emergency dental care, medical evacuation and repatriation, third-party liability, lost baggage and documents, legal assistance and interpreter help, and flight delays over 4 hours. Exact limits differ by plan; read the policy schedule you receive.
You can buy while already in Thailand
Many insurers only sell before departure. EKTA has an "Already traveling" option for people who are already abroad. Expect a waiting period before cover starts in this case (check the exact number of days in the terms), and illnesses that began before the policy are not covered.
24/7 support in messengers
Support is listed as 24/7 by phone, email, WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram. In an emergency, contact the assistance service before treatment wherever possible, so they can arrange a guarantee of payment with the hospital.
The honest limits
- The underwriter is offshore. A Comoros-licensed insurer is not supervised by an EU, UK or Australian regulator, and you would not have access to those countries' ombudsman schemes in a dispute. Many travellers accept this for the price and the convenience; some do not. Decide consciously.
- Scooter claims are where disputes happen. Public reviews of EKTA include complaints about refused moped claims, including arguments over which activity level applied. This is true of travel insurance in general, but it means you must read the motorcycle clauses: licence category, helmet, engine size, alcohol, and any speed or activity conditions.
- No licence, no cover. Across the industry, riding without a valid motorcycle licence (your home licence with the right category plus an International Driving Permit, or a Thai licence) is a standard reason to refuse a claim. Riding without a helmet or after drinking is another.
- Not a trip-cancellation product. EKTA is built mainly around medical and travel emergencies. If you need strong cover for cancelling an expensive pre-paid trip, check that specifically, or buy a separate product.
- Refunds only before the policy starts. Once active, a policy is generally not refundable.
We explain how scooter claims are assessed, and why they get rejected, in travel insurance in Thailand for scooter riders and why scooter insurance claims are refused in Phuket.
When another insurer is the better choice
- You want a regulator at home. If you live in the EU, UK, Australia or Canada, a policy from an insurer regulated in your country gives you local complaint routes. It may cost more.
- You have a pre-existing condition. Specialist insurers that declare and cover medical conditions are a better fit.
- You live in Thailand long-term. Annual local health insurance or international expat health plans cover outpatient care and check-ups, which travel insurance does not aim to do.
- Your credit card already includes travel insurance. Check its limits for medical evacuation and motorcycle riding before buying twice.
Practical tips for Phuket
- Save the assistance number and your policy PDF offline in your phone and send a copy to someone at home.
- Know the main hospitals. Phuket has large private hospitals in Phuket Town and near Patong, and a government hospital in Phuket Town. Private hospitals often ask for a deposit or a guarantee of payment from your insurer.
- Keep every document: medical reports, receipts, a police report after a road accident, and photos. Claims without paperwork are slow.
- Wear the helmet, carry the licence. It protects your head and your claim. Our guide to scooter licence, helmet and checkpoints in Phuket explains what police check.
Bottom line
We recommend EKTA for a typical Phuket holiday because it is quick to buy, priced clearly by activity level, has a zero-deductible option, can be bought while you are already travelling and offers 24/7 help in messengers. Its limits are real: an offshore underwriter and the usual strict conditions for scooter accidents. Choose Gold or higher, pick the right activity level, ride legally, and you get solid value for the money.
