Renting a car in Phuket takes ten minutes. The first roundabout takes longer. Everything you know about driving is mirrored here: the wheel is on the right, you drive on the left, you look right first at every junction, and the driver behind you is on a scooter and will overtake wherever there is a gap. Our car driving lessons in Phuket put you in an automatic car with an instructor beside you for one, one and a half or two hours, first on a closed training ground and then on the real roads: Phuket Town, the U-turn pockets on highway 402, the Patong hill. The aim is simple: by the time you collect a rental car, driving on the left already feels normal.

Who takes car lessons here

  • Licence holders who have never driven on the left. You know how to drive. You do not know how to drive here. One or two lessons with an instructor are cheaper than a rental company's damage deposit and far less stressful than learning with your family in the car.
  • Complete beginners. Phuket in the early morning, on a closed ground and then on quiet roads, is a surprisingly good place to learn from zero: automatic cars, patient instructors who speak English and Russian, and lessons seven days a week from 07:00 to 18:00.
  • Drivers coming back after a long break. A few years in a city with good public transport, a move to a new country, a lost habit. A short refresher course restores the reflexes before you take responsibility for a rental car.
  • People preparing for the Thai driving test. If you are staying long enough to want a Thai licence, the school helps with category B for 15,000 baht in 5–7 working days, and the lessons prepare you for the manoeuvres examiners look for. Details are on the Thai driving licence page.
  • Families who decided against a scooter. If you have read anything about Phuket accident statistics and chose four wheels for the children's sake, this page is for you. If you still want two wheels for yourself, the same school runs scooter and motorbike lessons.

What a lesson covers

All lessons are in automatic cars, and the car is the instructor's, so there is nothing to rent and no deposit to worry about. You choose the length of the lesson: one hour is enough for a focused refresher on a single skill, one and a half hours is the most common choice for left-hand-traffic adaptation, and two hours lets you combine the ground, the city and a highway or hill run in one session.

On the training ground

The first part of the first lesson is spent on a closed ground. You adjust the seat and mirrors for a right-hand-drive car, get used to the fact that the gear selector and handbrake are now operated with your left hand, and discover how often you reach for the indicator and switch on the wipers instead. Then parking: reversing into a bay, parallel parking against a kerb that is on the wrong side, a three-point turn in a tight space. The ground is also where beginners learn smooth braking and steering before they meet traffic.

In the city

Phuket Town and the roads around Chalong and Kathu are where left-hand traffic stops being a theory. You practise keeping left and judging the car's width from the right-hand seat, turning right across traffic at a junction, reading roundabouts that flow clockwise, and coping with scooters filtering past on both sides and pickup trucks stopping in front of a 7-Eleven without warning. The instructor shows you how locals use the dedicated U-turn pockets instead of turning across the road, and how to pull in and park outside a shop without blocking the motorbike lane.

Patong hill and highway 402

Two roads deserve their own practice. The Patong hill, between Kathu and Patong, is steep with hairpin bends, tour buses and overheating brakes on the descent; you learn to shift the automatic into a lower gear and let the engine do the work. Highway 402 is the main road running the length of the island towards the airport and the bridge to the mainland: fast traffic, exits on the left, and U-turn pockets where you must judge the gap in oncoming traffic before swinging back. After one run of each with the instructor talking you through it, the rest of the island holds no surprises.

Car driving lessons Phuket: prices

Prices are per lesson in Thai baht and depend on the length of the lesson and the size of the package. All cars are automatic.

Lesson length1 lesson3 lessons5 lessons10 lessons
1 hour2,000 ฿5,600 ฿9,000 ฿17,000 ฿
1.5 hours2,500 ฿7,100 ฿11,250 ฿23,000 ฿
2 hours3,000 ฿8,500 ฿13,500 ฿26,500 ฿

A transfer from your hotel to the training ground for the first lesson costs 300 baht. You can pay in Thai baht, US dollars, Russian roubles or USDT. For most left-hand-traffic adaptations, three lessons of one and a half hours is the sensible middle ground; beginners usually start with a package of five or ten two-hour lessons and extend as needed. Say what you want to achieve in the request and the manager will suggest a plan.

Driving on the left: what actually trips people up

It is not the big things. Nobody forgets which side of the road to use when there is traffic around. The mistakes happen in the quiet moments: pulling out of a hotel car park onto an empty road and drifting to the right, turning into the wrong lane at a junction with no other cars, hugging the left kerb because the car feels too wide from the right-hand seat. The instructor watches for exactly these moments and corrects them before they become habits.

A few rules of the road are worth knowing before the first lesson. A left turn on a red light is not automatically allowed, whatever other tourists tell you; it is permitted only where a sign or a green arrow says so, the fine for doing it elsewhere is 200–500 baht, and even where it is allowed you must give way to everyone. U-turns are made in the dedicated U-turn pockets, never from the middle of a two-way road. Motorbikes keep to the far left lane, which means you should expect them there and check your left mirror before every left turn. Lane filtering by motorbikes between stopped cars is formally illegal but not enforced; assume it will happen. More practical advice is in our driving tips for Phuket.

Licence rules for tourists driving a car

Driving without a licence or without the right category carries up to a month in jail or a fine of up to 1,000 baht by law; in practice, at a checkpoint, it is 200–1,000 baht. Leaving your licence at the hotel can cost up to 1,000 baht, and an expired licence up to 2,000. The Department of Land Transport has proposed raising the penalty for unlicensed driving to three months in jail or 50,000 baht, but this is planned, not adopted yet.

If you hold a Russian licence: Thailand ratified the 1968 Vienna Convention, listed in the UN registry since 1 May 2020, so a Russian national licence is formally valid and a 1968-style International Driving Permit is recognised. In practice, police at checkpoints want to see the IDP, so the sensible kit is the national licence plus an IDP. Our article on the international driving licence in Phuket goes into the detail. If you plan to stay for months, a Thai licence removes the question entirely; the school helps with category B for 15,000 baht in 5–7 working days.

Alcohol: the limit is lower than you think

The general limit in Thailand is 50 mg% (0.05 BAC). A lower limit of 20 mg% applies to drivers under 20, to holders of a temporary first two-year licence, and to anyone driving without a licence or without the right category. Penalties for drink-driving are up to one year in jail and/or 5,000–20,000 baht plus licence suspension for at least six months; if someone is injured, 1–5 years and 20,000–100,000 baht; if someone dies, 3–10 years and 60,000–200,000 baht. Refusing the breathalyser counts as an admission of guilt. The practical rule for a visitor with a rental car: if you have had a drink, take a taxi.

Insurance basics

Every vehicle in Thailand carries compulsory insurance known as Por Ror Bor, and it is important to understand what it does and does not do. It covers people, not vehicles. On a no-fault basis it pays medical costs up to 30,000 baht per person, 35,000 for death or loss of an organ, and up to 65,000 combined. If the victim is not at fault, the limits rise to 80,000 baht for medical costs, 200,000–500,000 for disability, 500,000 for death, and 200 baht per day of hospital stay for up to 20 days. Repairs to the car are not covered at all. Whatever your rental company offers on top, read the contract before you sign, and remember that a police report is required for any insurance payout after an accident.

How to book a car lesson

  1. Fill in the request form at the bottom of this page: where you are staying, your driving experience, and what you want from the lessons — left-hand-traffic practice, learning from zero, a refresher, or test preparation.
  2. The school manager replies the same day and suggests a lesson length, a start date and a time between 07:00 and 18:00.
  3. If you need the transfer for the first lesson, the manager arranges it for 300 baht.
  4. Bring your licence if you have one; the car, the instructor and the route are taken care of.

All of the school's services — car, motorbike and Thai licence assistance — are listed on the driving school hub page.

Request a lesson — the school manager replies the same day.

Frequently asked questions

How much do car driving lessons in Phuket cost?

A one-hour lesson costs 2,000 baht, 1.5 hours 2,500 baht, 2 hours 3,000 baht. Packages are cheaper per lesson: for example, 5 lessons of 1.5 hours cost 11,250 baht and 10 two-hour lessons cost 26,500 baht.

Are the cars automatic or manual?

All lessons are in automatic cars. The car belongs to the instructor, so you do not need to rent anything or pay a deposit.

I have a licence at home. Do I still need a lesson before renting a car in Phuket?

Many experienced drivers take one to three lessons purely to get used to left-hand traffic, right-hand-drive controls, U-turn pockets and clockwise roundabouts. It is cheaper than a rental damage deposit and far less stressful than learning with passengers in the car.

Can a complete beginner learn to drive in Phuket?

Yes. Beginners start on a closed training ground and move to quiet roads only when braking, steering and parking are comfortable. Most start with a package of 5 or 10 lessons and extend if needed.

How long is a lesson?

You choose: 1 hour, 1.5 hours or 2 hours. Lessons run seven days a week from 07:00 to 18:00, and instructors speak English and Russian.

Is there a hotel transfer?

Yes, a transfer from your hotel to the training ground for the first car lesson costs 300 baht. The manager arranges it when confirming your booking.

Is my Russian licence valid for driving a car in Thailand?

Formally yes: Thailand ratified the 1968 Vienna Convention (UN registry since 1 May 2020), and a 1968-style International Driving Permit is recognised. In practice police want to see the IDP, so carry the national licence plus the IDP, or get a Thai licence if you stay longer.

Can the lessons prepare me for the Thai driving test?

Yes. The school helps with a Thai category B licence for 15,000 baht in 5–7 working days, and the practical lessons cover the manoeuvres examiners look for, such as parking and reversing.
