Why We Recommend Localrent for Car Rental in Phuket

An honest look at Localrent in Phuket: how booking with local rental companies works, what you pay online and at pickup, deposits, documents, cancellation rules, and when GetRentacar or QEEQ is the better choice.

Why We Recommend Localrent for Car Rental in Phuket

On GoGo Phuket we recommend one partner for each travel need, and for car rental that partner is Localrent. This page explains why, what the service actually does, what it costs you, and in which situations we would send you somewhere else. We earn a commission if you book through our button, and it does not change your price. That is exactly why we want the reasoning to be visible.

What Localrent is, in one paragraph

Localrent is an online marketplace for car rental from local companies rather than the big international brands. In Phuket that means island-based rental firms that deliver cars to the airport, your hotel or a meeting point. Localrent runs the website, the booking, the advance payment and customer support. The local company provides the car, signs the rental contract with you, and takes the deposit at handover.

That split matters, because it explains both the strengths and the weak points of the service.

Why we chose it for Phuket

1. Local companies are how Phuket actually rents cars

International brands do have desks at Phuket Airport, but a large share of the island's rental fleet belongs to local firms. They are often cheaper, deliver to hotels in Kata, Rawai or Bang Tao at no or low cost, and are more flexible with deposits. The problem has always been trust: a random Facebook page or a roadside sign gives you no way to compare prices or to complain later. Localrent puts those firms in one catalogue with the specific car photos, conditions and the deposit amount shown before you book.

2. You pay only an advance online

When you book, you pay an advance through the site. The rest of the rental, the deposit and any extras are paid to the local company when you receive the car, in cash or by card depending on the company. For a traveller this lowers the risk: if something goes wrong before the trip, you have only a part of the money at stake, not the full rental.

3. Deposits are visible in advance and often moderate

Localrent says the average deposit across its partners is around 300 euros, and that some partners rent with no deposit at all. In Phuket the amount depends on the company and the car class: an economy sedan usually asks for much less than a large SUV or a convertible. The point is that you see the figure before you pay, which is not always the case when you walk into a rental shop.

4. Many cars can be taken without a credit card

Big international brands usually block the deposit on a credit card in the driver's name. Localrent's Phuket page states that most cars are available without a credit card. If you travel only with a debit card or prefer cash, this alone can decide the choice.

5. Support in many languages

The site lists support in more than 25 languages, including English, Russian, Thai, German, French and Chinese, by email and phone. When the local company does not speak your language, having a middleman who does is genuinely useful.

What it costs

Prices depend on season and car class. On Localrent's Phuket page, daily prices at the time of writing ranged roughly from about 1,000 to 2,600 baht per day, with the low season (around August) cheapest and February–March most expensive. Treat these as orientation only and check the current price for your dates. Delivery to the airport is often included or cheap; very late-night handovers may cost extra with some companies.

Cancellation: read this part carefully

Free cancellation depends on the car category and has a deadline shown in your booking. Independent reviews of Localrent's public terms report free cancellation up to around 7 days before pickup for standard cars and up to 30 days for luxury cars and convertibles, and say that a payment-service fee of about 6% of the online advance is kept in any case. Refunds, per the public offer, are usually processed within 14 business days after you apply. Check the exact rules on your own booking page before paying, because they are what applies to you.

Documents you need in Phuket

  • Your national driving licence plus an International Driving Permit (or a Thai licence). Localrent itself lists both the international and the national licence as required.
  • Your passport. Electronic copies and photos of documents are not accepted at handover.
  • A bank card, if the company takes the deposit by card.

Police checkpoints in Phuket do check licences, and insurance can refuse to pay if you drive without a valid one. Our detailed guide on renting a car in Phuket: licence, deposit, insurance and parking covers this in depth.

The honest downsides

  • The car comes from a local firm, not a global brand. Quality varies between companies. Read the reviews of the specific company, not just the car model.
  • Insurance terms are set by each company. Basic cover is required by law, but the excess (the part you pay after damage) differs. Ask what is excluded: tyres, glass, underbody and damage while driving on unpaved roads are common exclusions.
  • The online fee is not fully refundable. If your plans are very uncertain, factor in the retained fee.
  • Deposit refunds depend on the company. A cash deposit is returned at drop-off; a card hold can take days to release, depending on your bank.

When an alternative is better

QEEQ is a comparison site for big international and regional brands. Choose it if you specifically want an airport desk of a known brand, a credit-card-only process you are used to from Europe, or one-way rentals to other provinces, where large brands have more locations.

GetRentacar is another marketplace with roots in Phuket that also includes cars from private owners. Its model is similar: a part of the price (reported as 15%) is paid online and the rest at handover. It can be worth comparing for long rentals of a month or more, when private owners sometimes offer better monthly rates.

And if you only need a car for one or two days, ask yourself whether you need a car at all. For an airport run and one day trip, ride-hailing or a transfer can be cheaper once you add fuel and parking. We compare the options in car rental vs Grab and taxi in Phuket.

Practical tips for Phuket

  • Film the car at handover from all sides, including the wheels, the fuel gauge and the odometer. Send the video to yourself so it has a timestamp.
  • Ask about the fuel rule. Most companies use same-level-to-same-level. Petrol stations are plentiful, but fewer near the airport late at night.
  • Parking in Patong is the real headache. If you stay in Patong, ask the hotel about parking before you rent.
  • Drive slowly on the hills. Patong hill, Kata–Karon viewpoints and the Nai Harn road are steep and wet in the rainy season.
  • Keep the company's phone number saved in your phone and on paper, and ask how they handle an accident: whom to call first and whether they send their own insurance agent.

Bottom line

We recommend Localrent because it matches how Phuket really works: local companies, hotel delivery, moderate deposits and often no need for a credit card, with a middleman who shows the conditions before you pay and answers in your language. It is not the right tool if you want a global brand at the airport desk or if you are likely to cancel at the last minute.
