What you'll see on the Similan Islands

The route centres on Island 8, Koh Similan, where you climb to the famous Sail Rock for a panoramic view and relax on its white beach. Snorkeling stops follow at Island 9 (Koh Bangu) and, depending on the program, Island 7 (Koh Payu) or the waters around Koh Miang. The day winds down on Island 4, Koh Miang, with lunch and free time; on the early programs you walk a jungle trail between its two beaches, where flying foxes are sometimes spotted.

Choosing your Similan program

Similan Islands (classic) is the standard speedboat day with pickup around 05:30–07:00 and three island stops after Island 8. Early departure picks you up at 03:30–05:00, so you are on the water by about 06:00 and back at the pier by mid-afternoon. Comfort follows the classic route but adds a full dinner and a beach bag with mask, fins, towels and a mat, and it can collect you from Khao Lak too. Early departure Comfort combines the early start with perks: a front-loading speedboat, groups of up to 38, free fins, towels, raincoats and disposable snorkel mouthpieces, beer at the pier in the morning and a glass of wine on return. Catamaran takes a different order of stops, starting with snorkeling between Islands 5 and 6, fins and towels included, and an option to leave 1.5 hours later.

How long is the journey?

The Similans are far from Phuket, so be ready for a long day. A minivan to Tap Lamu pier takes 1 to 3 hours depending on your hotel, followed by 1–1.5 hours by speedboat. If the trip leaves from Sarasin pier, the drive is 30 minutes to 2 hours and the boat takes 1.5–2 hours.

Practical tips

Coral shoes are strongly recommended; fins are rented separately on the classic and early programs. Bring sunscreen, a hat and a dry bag for your phone. Speedboats are strictly off-limits during pregnancy — tell our manager when booking if you're expecting. The national park is open roughly mid-October to mid-May, and the route may change because of weather.
