What the two days look like
Day one is a drive north with sightseeing stops — depending on the camp, the Sarasin Bridge, Wat Suwan Khuha cave temple with its monkeys, the Temple of Heaven and Hell or the ornate Wat Bang Thong — plus an elephant village. Around midday you board a traditional Thai boat at the Cheow Lan pier, pass the Guilin rocks and check in at your floating house after lunch at the lake restaurant. The afternoon is free for swimming and canoeing, most camps add an evening boat safari to look for wildlife, and dinner is Thai-style.
Day two starts early on the water with a morning safari or a scenic ride back to the pier, followed by a viewpoint over the lake or the national park and more stops on the way to Phuket.
Choosing your rafthouse
Phutawan Rafthouse is the relaxed option: elephant village with a choice of elephant spa or a ride, an evening safari, and an easy second day with a lake viewpoint and Wat Suwan Khuha, back at your hotel in the early afternoon. Canoes are included; you can pick a bungalow or a capsule house.
Saichol Rafthouse has floating houses with a private toilet and shower. Its second day is packed: sunrise safari, a waterfall, the fish cave temple Wat Wanaram, bamboo rafting, lunch in the park and a dip in hot mineral springs. Canoes are extra.
Phu Pha Waree Rafthouse is the most comfortable camp, with en-suite Deluxe or new VIP houses, canoes included, evening and morning safaris, hot springs, elephants and bamboo rafting on day two. Laguna Rafthouse also has en-suite houses and canoes, focuses on temples, and ends with a seafood lunch in a sea gypsy village and Samet Nangshe viewpoint.
Who it suits and tips
This Khao Sok overnight tour is calm rather than sporty and works for families and couples. It is marked as suitable for pregnant travellers, but riding elephants is not recommended during pregnancy. Pack a small overnight bag, swimwear, a flashlight, insect repellent and a light layer for the evening. Temple entrance tickets are paid on the spot, and single occupancy costs extra.
