A Bigger, Better Phuket Airport Is Coming
Phuket International Airport (HKT) is getting a major upgrade. The new international terminal, currently under construction, is set to significantly increase passenger capacity and reduce those frustrating immigration queues that every visitor knows too well.
What’s Changing?
The expansion includes a brand-new international arrivals hall, additional immigration counters, and modernized baggage handling systems. The goal is to cut average processing times from 45 minutes to under 20 minutes during peak season.
For travelers, this means less time standing in line and more time enjoying the island. The new terminal will also feature improved air conditioning, more seating areas, and better signage in multiple languages including English, Chinese, and Russian.
How This Affects Your Trip
Getting from the airport to your hotel is about to get smoother too. The expansion includes a redesigned ground transportation area with dedicated lanes for taxis, hotel shuttles, and rental car pickups. If you’re planning to explore the island at your own pace, having a car waiting for you at the new terminal will be the most convenient option.
The new road connecting the airport to the main highway is also being widened, which should reduce the notorious traffic bottlenecks that plague the Thepkrasattri Road during high season.
When Will It Be Ready?
Construction is expected to complete by late 2026, with partial operations beginning as early as Q3. This means visitors arriving for the 2026-2027 high season should already benefit from some of the improvements.
Our Tip
Book your transportation in advance, especially during the transition period. Having a rental car ready at the airport means you won’t have to navigate temporary detours or construction zones on foot looking for a taxi.
