Phi Phi’s Coral Reefs Are Making a Comeback
After years of careful conservation, several previously closed snorkeling areas around the Phi Phi Islands are reopening to visitors. The coral restoration project, a collaboration between Thai marine biologists and international conservation groups, has successfully regenerated reef ecosystems that were damaged by overtourism and coral bleaching.
What’s New for Snorkelers
Three new snorkeling zones have been designated around Phi Phi Leh, offering visitors a chance to see healthy, vibrant coral formations that haven’t been accessible for several years. The areas feature:
- Loh Samah Bay — now home to restored staghorn coral colonies teeming with tropical fish
- Pileh Lagoon East — a new guided snorkeling route through recovered reef gardens
- Maya Bay Outer Reef — the famous beach area now has designated snorkeling corridors
New Rules to Know
To protect the restored reefs, new visitor guidelines are in effect:
- Maximum 300 visitors per day across all three zones
- Mandatory use of reef-safe sunscreen (available at departure points)
- No touching or standing on coral (fins recommended)
- Guided groups only — no independent snorkeling in restored zones
Best Way to Experience It
The new zones are accessible via day trips from Phuket, which typically depart from Rassada Pier at 8:30 AM. Check our Phi Phi tour options for trips that include the new snorkeling zones — early booking is recommended as daily visitor caps mean spots fill up fast.
Why This Matters
This restoration success is a model for sustainable tourism in Thailand. It proves that with proper management, tourism and marine conservation can coexist. For visitors, it means the Phi Phi experience is now better than it’s been in over a decade — healthier reefs mean more fish, more colors, and more memorable underwater encounters.
