Do You Need an International License to Drive in Phuket? Everything You Need to Know

Find out whether you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Phuket, what happens at police checkpoints, and how to avoid fines.

Do You Need an International License to Drive in Phuket? Everything You Need to Know

The Short Answer

Technically, yes — Thai law requires foreigners to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside their national license. However, the reality on the ground is more nuanced than a simple yes or no.

What is an International Driving Permit?

An IDP is a standardized document that translates your national driver's license into multiple languages. It's recognized in over 150 countries as a supplement to your regular license. Important: an IDP is NOT a standalone license — you must always carry your national license alongside it.

Thai Law: What It Actually Says

According to the Thailand Land Transport Act, foreigners driving in Thailand must carry either:

  • A valid Thai driving license, OR
  • An International Driving Permit (1949 Geneva Convention or 1968 Vienna Convention), OR
  • A driving license from a country that has a bilateral agreement with Thailand

Police Checkpoints in Phuket

Phuket has regular police checkpoints, especially around Patong, Kata, and the main highways. Here's what typically happens:

  • With IDP: Officers check it, smile, and wave you through. Takes 30 seconds.
  • Without IDP: You may be fined 500–1,000 THB on the spot. Some officers accept a national license with a polite attitude, but it's not guaranteed.
  • No license at all: Fine of 1,000–2,000 THB, and your vehicle may be impounded.

Insurance Implications

This is the most important reason to have an IDP. If you're involved in an accident and don't have a valid IDP:

  • Your rental car insurance may be voided
  • You could be held personally liable for all damages
  • Hospital bills won't be covered by your travel insurance if you were driving illegally

Getting an IDP costs $15–20 and takes 10 minutes at your local automobile association. That small investment could save you thousands in a worst-case scenario.

How to Get an IDP

  • USA: AAA offices — $20, issued same day
  • UK: Post Office — £5.50, takes 5–7 days
  • Russia: ГИБДД — ~2,000 рублей, issued in 1–3 days
  • Australia: AAA or RACQ — AUD $39, issued same day
  • Canada: CAA offices — CAD $25, issued same day

Our Recommendation

Always get an IDP before coming to Phuket. It's cheap, quick to obtain, and protects you legally and financially. At GoGo Phuket, we accept both IDP and national licenses for car rentals, but we strongly recommend having an IDP for your own peace of mind.
